Hello! I am a political progressive, living in the middle of the Midwest, who has a decidedly populist view of the world yet not one that aligns with the right wing populism that is so ascendant in the US today. I would trace my political lineage to a form of populism with democratic socialist, communitarian, and mutual aid traditions. Mostly, I am interested in the ways in which social and public policy can be shaped to help the bottom 2/3 of our income and wealth hierarchy, and which can help to create meaningful and respectful alliances between people across differences of race, gender, ethnicity. sexuality, religion, region, ability status, and even political party. My hope is to post each week about an issue that is part of our political or cultural conversations in the US, and to try to offer a pragmatic, progressive, and populist take on how we might improve our Common Good.
As I write this in 2021, Americans seem to be growing increasingly separate from one another, sorted out into our own enclaves of like minded citizens. This has been referred to as the Big Sort by author Bill Bishop. It refers to the echo chambers in which we currently hold political conversations--the way we winnow our world in real life and on social media to speak only to those who agree with us. My goal is to reach out to those with different views and ask whether there are any places where shared values and goals can allow us to move past the rancor so that we can have conversations about our Common Good and how to get there.
Feel free to contact me or leave a reasonable civil comment. I will try to reply to those who earnestly want to have a conversation. Real patriots I think will want to work to keep the country from coming apart at the seams. It's not to late--I hope you will join me and let me know what you think.
Thanks for checking out the site!
Edward
